In the early 1900’s, a young woman named Elise returns to the mysterious Red Manor, a mansion on a remote island that she grew up in after her mother tragically passed away. At Red Manor, Elise relives memories of her childhood and is haunted by ghosts that still reside within the decaying red walls of the old mansion. As she attempts to piece together the reasons for her return, for which she has no memory of, her decisions and past will shape the lives of a young couple living a hundred years later. The couple Andrew and Anna are both suffering from depression and are having difficulty dealing with their lives and the complexities involved in sustaining a relationship when both feel that they are unable to do so. Just as Elise must figure out her past in order to move on, so must Andrew discover the truth of his own past and learn to overcome his tragic memories— if he has any chance of living a normal life with Anna. However, sometimes in order to move on we must sacrifice everything we know and place our trust in uncertainty. Trust in the idea that there may be a bit of magic reserved for us in an often cruel world. Waiting for Fireflies is a story about how love can change both the past and the future in unexpected ways. Connected through time by the secretive Red Manor and a mythical white stag, Elise, Andrew, and Anna may just find the hope they are so desperately waiting for.

As strange as the book progressed there is a desire to see where this type of literary prose held just below the surface. The unveiling of the human spirit in all of it's nakedness was rather sobering. I could not put it down until the very end. A great study of the human physiology.Product details

Matthew Fish always delivers in his books, each page full of hope and magic, and he certainly lives up to his reputation with "Waiting for Fireflies." First off, the cover is absolutely breath taking. When I first saw it I thought it was a photograph. It's so life-like and beautiful. Each character has been handled with care, crafted with their own personality, and their own heart. They're very life-like, and gives me the impression that they could have been actual people, taken from reality and placed in this book. Fish's book, "Waiting for Fireflies", is one full of magic, hope, and soul searching. It hooks you from the very beginning with its beautiful imagery, diverse characters, and beautiful story, and you cannot turn away from it until you've reached the final page.
I loved the setting for the first of the two linked stories contained in this novel. It was well written, myseterious, and I found the concept of Elise and Red Manor extremely facinating. I love that Matthew Fish has thrown out conventional chapters, instead choosing to start new chapters mid sentence by bolding text. A very unconventional story that I found captivating up to one of the best endings I have ever read.
The second half, however, I found was not as great as the first half, telling the story of two troubled young adults dealing with depression and how it interplays into their relationship. While very realistic, perhaps that is the story's main flaw. The first one is more fable like, full of mystery and magic, while the second one is a more serious, meloncholy tale. However the ending once again makes up for any shortcomings.
This has been my 3rd novel by this author and no one writes endings like these.
Slow moving boring story. I kept waiting for something to happen. The back and forth left me puzzled at times
Most of us live our lives in expectant waiting. Some are more proactive than others. I wonder what choices we would make if we had the opportunity?
This has got to be the best book that I have read this summer! It is beautifully written. Towards the middle of the book, the author switches gears but I highly encourage you to keep reading. It all comes together in the end.
